Australia Junction Mine, Broken Hill.
This is the head frame of Junction Mine. The mine operated between 1886 and 1975. It is a good example of the smaller mines on the Line of Lode at Broken Hill. Undercapitalised and with limited ore reserves, the mine struggled after the initial rich ores were exhausted and the capital and ore reserves to develop it into a larger mine were lacking.
Photography Tips
When creating a silhouette by looking into the light, it is essential not to overexpose the highlights. Set the exposure by metering off the brightest area of the sky. Then adjust the exposure while watching the histogram to "expose to the right", being careful not to overexpose. Tanks and other structures provide additional subjects of interest.
Travel Information
The mine is on the Medindie Road close to the eastern edge of the town. It is less than two km from the town hall. You can drive up to the head frame.
