Australia Kangaroo Ground toward Dandenong Ranges
An elevated lookout tower with views in multiple directions. To the west, Melbourne's outer suburbs give way to open country with the Macedon Ranges on the horizon. To the south, the Dandenong Ranges sit on the skyline. In summer, the sun sets over the city itself and the suburban sprawl and distant towers silhouette well against the sky. The lookout is best for sunset; good views throughout the area don't require the lookout. Wineries in the immediate area. The Yarra Valley is a short drive east.
Photography Tips
Two distinct shots depending on direction: face west for sunset with the Macedon Ranges as backdrop, east for sunrise across the Strathewan valleys towards the Kinglake Ranges. Winter gives the best fog conditions. Arrive well before first light to catch the valley fog at its deepest as it clears quickly once the sun is up. A longer focal length (100mm+) compresses the layered ridgelines well. Wide angle works for the full valley panorama looking east.
Travel Information
Parking, toilets, seating and lookout tower on site. Pick up food in Eltham (about 10 min west) to watch the sunset. Bus services run to the area but are limited after business hours; check timetables before relying on public transport for an early morning or sunset shoot. Wineries in the local area; the Yarra Valley with its cellar doors is within 15 to 20 min east. Approximately 45 min from Melbourne CBD.
