Flooded river flats on the Yarra corridor in Heidelberg, with dead trees standing in permanently still water. In calm conditions the surface becomes a near-perfect mirror. Morning mist sits low over the water in cooler months, and the golden sunrise glow behind the treeline lifts the whole scene. The dead trees are the subject, their reflections double the composition. Close to Melbourne with easy access.

Photography Tips

Sunrise only. Calm mornings are essential. Any breeze breaks the reflection. Winter and early spring give the best mist conditions. Get low to the water's edge to fill the frame with the reflection. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise to find your position. Dress for cold, wet conditions. Do not visit in summer or thereabouts, the area is heavily infested with tiger snakes. Be respectful of the environment; this is a sensitive wetland habitat.

Travel Information

Park off Somerset Drive, Viewbank. Short walk to the water. Approximately 15km from Melbourne CBD, around 20 to 25 minutes by car. Public Transport nearby.
