Australia Kerferd Road Pier

Heritage-listed timber pier extending into Port Phillip Bay at Albert Park Beach, about 4km from the CBD. The white-painted deck and evenly spaced lamp posts form a strong diagonal leading line straight out to sea. Underneath, old weathered black pylons contrast with the clean deck above. West-facing, so it catches sunset light directly on the railing. Best shot as a long exposure: the water flattens completely and the clouds streak in the same direction as the pier.

An ND1000 is essential if you're shooting before dark; aim for 30 seconds or longer to fully smooth the water. Shoot from beach level to the side of the pier, not from the deck itself; you want the railing and lamp posts as a diagonal across the frame rather than shooting straight down. The classic composition is three-layered: beach or water foreground, glassy mid-water, streaked cloud above. Golden hour sunset is the sweet spot; the low angle catches the warm side-light on the white timber. Tripod and cable release are non-negotiable.

The pier is right at the base of Kerferd Road where it meets the beach. Tram 1 runs along St Kilda Road to a stop about 5 minutes' walk away. Short walk south from Albert Park village shops.
