Austria Galtalm reservoir, Stubaital

The small mountain reservoir near Galtalm in the Schlick 2000 area offers some of the best reflection photography opportunities in the Stubai Valley.

Surrounded by impressive Alpine peaks, golden mountain meadows, and beautiful trees, the reservoir creates an almost perfectly symmetrical composition when the water is calm. Sunrise is particularly magical, with the first warm sunlight illuminating the surrounding mountains and trees while the lake reflects the entire scenery.

Sunrise is highly recommended, especially on calm mornings with little or no wind. Still water creates beautiful reflections of the mountain peaks and trees, making symmetrical compositions especially effective.

A wide-angle or standard zoom lens, such as a 24–70mm or 28–70mm, works perfectly here. Place the horizon near the center of the frame to emphasize the reflections.

Autumn is especially beautiful, with golden larches adding warm colors to the landscape. Try arriving before sunrise to capture the changing light as the first rays of the sun reach the mountains.

The Galtalm mountain reservoir is located in the Schlick 2000 hiking area above Fulpmes in the Stubai Valley.

Staying overnight at Galtalm is highly recommended, as the reservoir is only about a 10-minute walk from the mountain hut. This makes photographing sunrise or sunset much easier without planning a long hike in the dark.
During the day, you can reach the area via the Schlick 2000 cable cars and connecting hiking trails. However, regular cable car service generally doesn't run early enough for sunrise photography.

Make sure to check accommodation availability at Galtalm and the current cable car operating times before visiting. Bring warm clothing, as mountain temperatures can be surprisingly cold, especially around sunrise in autumn.
