Austria Ruetz Katarakt white water, Stubaital
The Ruetz Katarakt in the Stubai Valley is a beautiful whitewater section of the Ruetz River, surrounded by dense Alpine forests, steep rock formations, and impressive mountain scenery.
The turquoise water rushing through the narrow rocky gorge creates fantastic opportunities for landscape photography. Especially in autumn, the mix of colorful foliage, dark evergreen trees, and milky-blue glacial water makes this location especially photogenic.

Photography Tips
A wide-angle lens, such as a 15–35mm, is ideal for capturing the river winding through the rocky gorge while including the surrounding forest.
Look for elevated viewpoints along the trail to photograph the river from above. The water's natural curves create excellent leading lines, while overhanging branches and trees can help frame the composition.
Cloudy or slightly rainy days are especially recommended, as softer light reduces harsh contrast between the bright water and dark forest. A polarizing filter can also help reduce reflections on wet rocks and enhance the colors.
For a different look, experiment with longer exposures to soften the rushing water. A tripod and ND filter can help, but faster shutter speeds can also be effective for preserving the river's powerful movement.

Travel Information
The Ruetz Katarakt is located in the Stubai Valley in Tyrol, Austria, near the village of Tschangelair, along the road toward the Stubai Glacier.
You can explore the area via the WildeWasserWeg (Wild Water Trail), which offers several viewpoints overlooking the river and its rocky surroundings.
Some sections of the trail include uneven terrain, steps, and potentially slippery surfaces, especially after rainfall. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.
Autumn is an excellent time to visit, with colorful forests and fewer visitors compared to the busy summer season. However, the river is also impressive in late spring and summer, when snowmelt increases the flow.
