Austria Kogelsee, Lechtaler Alpen, Tirol
Kogelsee is a beautiful alpine lake nestled in the rugged mountains of the Lechtal Alps in Tyrol, surrounded by impressive peaks and untouched mountain scenery. Its clear waters reflect the surrounding mountain range, creating a wonderful setting for photography and a peaceful place to take a break during a mountain hike. Especially on calm mornings, when the water turns into a natural mirror, the lake reveals its full beauty.
Photography Tips
Use a wide-angle lens (around 14–24mm full-frame equivalent) to capture the lake in the foreground and the entire mountain range in the background. Get low and close to the water to create depth and use the shoreline as a natural leading line towards the peaks. For the best results, visit early in the morning when the wind is usually calmer and the reflections are at their best.
Travel Information
The hike starts in the small mountain village of Gramais (1,328 m), where you can park near the municipal building. Follow the marked trail through the Kogelkartal, staying alongside the Platzbach stream until you reach Kogelsee at 2,171 m. The ascent covers approximately 3.2 km with 837 metres of elevation gain and takes around 2.5–3 hours one way. Good hiking equipment, surefootedness and mountain experience are essential.
