Austria Saddle on the way to Kogelseespitze, Lechtal, Tirol
The saddle on the way to Kogelseespitze offers a spectacular alpine setting, surrounded by the rugged peaks and dramatic terrain of the Lechtal Alps. It is a beautiful transition between the mountain valleys, with sweeping views across the surrounding ridgelines and a real sense of being deep in the Tyrolean mountains. A perfect spot to pause, catch your breath and take in the wild beauty of this remote alpine landscape.
Photography Tips
A versatile mid-range zoom (24–70mm or 24–105mm) is ideal for capturing the dramatic mountain scenery around the saddle, combining the rugged landscape with the surrounding peaks. For wildlife photography, bring a telephoto lens (100–500mm or 150–400mm) to look for ibex along the rocky slopes and ridgelines. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best chances of spotting them, while the low-angle sunlight creates beautiful contrasts and highlights the mountain textures. Use longer focal lengths to isolate individual animals, capture silhouettes on the ridges or pick out interesting details in the illuminated rock faces.
Travel Information
The hike starts in the mountain village of Gramais (1,328 m), where you can park near the municipal building. Follow the marked trail through the Kogelkartal, staying alongside the Platzbach stream until you reach Kogelsee (2,171 m). From the lake, continue uphill towards Kogelseescharte (2,497 m), following the steep mountain trail towards Kogelseespitze (2,647 m). The saddle along this route offers fantastic panoramic views, but the terrain becomes increasingly alpine and requires surefootedness, a good head for heights and previous mountain experience. Allow approximately 4.5–5 hours for the ascent from Gramais to the summit.
