What the castle used to look like is not known.
In 1620 the castle was thoroughly rebuilt and adapted to the fashion of the time by the then castle owner. During the renovations, the old keep was preserved.
At the end of the 17th century, especially between 1692 and 1697, the castle suffered heavily from the numerous wars that ravaged the region at that time.
At the beginning of the 18th century, after a major fire, the castle was rebuilt by Jacques Mincé du Fontbaré who inherited the castle, which had belonged to Séverin de Mérode since 1715. His descendants carried out numerous alterations and renovations. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the barons Mincé du Fontbaré were mayors of Fumal.
The castle of Fumal is still inhabited by the family Mincé de Fontbaré.
