Belgium Cycling between the Mine Terrils
“Cycling between the Mine Terrils” is a unique cycling experience located in Maasmechelen, within the Hoge Kempen National Park. It’s a stunning blend of nature, history, and recreation, and one of the most remarkable tourist attractions in the Limburg region.
The route is situated in the Terhills area, a former coal mining site transformed into a nature and leisure destination. The highlight is a 380-meter-long floating pontoon bridge that gently curves just above the water surface, connecting the Twin Terril and the Panorama Terril of Eisden. This bridge offers a spectacular 360° view of the surrounding landscape shaped by the mining past. The bridge is part of the Limburg cycling route network, between nodes 502 and 565.
The mine terrils are remnants of the coal mines that once operated in Eisden. Today, they are covered in greenery and serve as a beautiful backdrop for recreation. Along the way, you’ll encounter relics such as old mining buildings and shafts, telling the story of the miners who once worked here.

Photography Tips
Best shooting times are early morning or late afternoon when the warm light enhances the textures of the terrils and reflections on the water. Try shooting toward the sun for dramatic silhouettes of cyclists on the pontoon bridge. Misty mornings or cloudy skies can add atmosphere and drama.
Don’t shy away from overcast days—they reduce harsh shadows and add moodiness.
Alternatively you can climb one of the terrils or use a drone for aerial shots of the bridge and surrounding landscape. These views emphasize the scale and geometry of the site.
