Belgium Lommelse Sahara - Waterplas
The lake in the Lommelse Sahara, located in Lommel, Belgium, is part of a striking and unusual landscape that blends natural beauty with industrial history.
Originally, the area was an industrial site in the Kempen region where quartz sand was mined. A zinc factory operating nearby caused severe environmental damage, killing off much of the vegetation. Later, the barren land was repurposed by a weapons manufacturer for grenade testing.
Eventually, the site was rehabilitated and transformed into a nature reserve. The lake itself was formed in a former quarry, and today it serves as a central feature of the reserve. Surrounded by white sand dunes and pine forests, the lake adds to the surreal, almost desert-like atmosphere of the area—hence the nickname “Belgian Sahara.”
