Belgium Brothers in Arms-memorial
In September 2006, during excavation work for a new gas pipeline on Frezenbergstraat in Zonnebeke, five bodies were discovered and professionally exhumed. All were missing soldiers from the 4th Australian Division who had served in the First World War. The final body had been carefully buried; a year later, DNA analysis identified him as John Hunter. Contact with the family revealed that John—the eldest of seven children—had gone to the front alongside his brother Jim. During the Battle of Polygon Wood on September 26, 1917, John was mortally wounded and died in his brother's arms at the age of 27.
This story inspired the members of the non-profit organization *Brothers in Arms* to design and create a memorial park dedicated to all brothers and sisters of various nationalities who lost their lives in war. Their mission: "to reunite their souls."
This unique concept aims to convey a message of peace to the world and serve as a symbol of profound reconciliation, love, and a commitment to peace—a message that is more relevant today than ever.
