Belgium Spinolarei, Brugge

The Spinolarei is one of those quieter corners of Bruges that perfectly captures the city's historic character. Rows of narrow houses with traditional stepped gables line the canal, and architecture from several centuries creates a particularly photogenic mix of shapes and colors. Historic records show both 19th-century façades and stepped gables dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries along this stretch.

Compared with famous locations such as Rozenhoedkaai, the scene feels much more residential and peaceful, especially first thing in the morning.

I photographed the houses around sunrise and early blue hour, which is probably my favorite time for this location. The streets are almost empty, the canal is relatively calm, and some streetlights are still ilit Their warm reflections create a beautiful contrast with the cooler morning light.

The red stepped-gable house makes an excellent anchor for the composition. Try shooting from one of the nearby bridges to position the row of façades diagonally through the frame, using their reflections to fill the lower half.

A standard zoom around 24–70 mm is ideal here. If the water is calm, experiment with both horizontal compositions that show more of the canal and tighter vertical shots that focus on individual façades and their reflections.

Spinolarei is located in the historic center of Bruges, just a short walk from Jan van Eyckplein. The canal continues alongside Spiegelrei, so you can easily explore both streets together; historic views show Spinolarei and Spiegelrei facing one another along the water.

There is no entrance fee or specific opening time—this is simply a public street and canal, making it an extremely easy photography stop. I recommend coming around sunrise, when Bruges is significantly quieter than during the day. From here, you can continue walking through the old town and combine this spot with Jan van Eyckplein, Spiegelrei, and the others near the canals.
