Fidel Castro and his men attacked the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba on July 26 1953, and this is seen as the start of the Cuban revolution. The attack failed. Bullet holes on the walls are preserved. The Barracks now serve as a school.

Travel Information

The Moncada Barracks lie about 1 km off the center of Santiago de Cuba. I walked to the site. There was security at the gate, but entry to the compound was free in January 2017. Movement was restricted to - lets say - the first 100 m beyond the gate. It might get slightly crowded, when a busload of tourists arrives.
