Finland Porvoo, South Finland
Porvoo is one of Finland's oldest and most picturesque towns, located approximately 50 kilometers east of Helsinki. Its charming Old Town is famous for its colorful wooden houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and historic buildings lining the Porvoonjoki River. The town's most recognizable landmark is the medieval Porvoo Cathedral, which stands prominently above the rooftops and creates a beautiful skyline.
One of the most photogenic perspectives is from across the river, where the colorful houses, cathedral, and surrounding trees form a wonderful composition. At sunrise, warm light illuminates the historic buildings, while the calm river can create near-perfect reflections. On cooler mornings, a thin layer of mist rising from the water adds an extra atmospheric element, making Porvoo an excellent destination for landscape, architecture, and drone photography.

Photography Tips
From this perspective, a drone is an excellent choice, letting you photograph the historic Old Town from slightly above the Porvoonjoki River. Position your camera towards the cathedral and use the colorful wooden houses in the foreground to create a layered composition. A relatively low flying altitude works particularly well, keeping the buildings prominent while including their reflections in the water.
Sunrise is definitely the best time for this shot. The morning light comes from behind or slightly beside the Old Town, illuminating the edges of the buildings and creating a beautiful golden atmosphere. On calm mornings, the river acts like a natural mirror, doubling the historic skyline's visual impact.
During autumn, cooler temperatures can also produce beautiful morning mist above the river, adding depth and atmosphere to your images. Try to keep the horizon out of the frame if the sky is particularly bright, and slightly underexpose your image to preserve the highlights around the rising sun.
A drone is not essential, however. You can also capture beautiful compositions from the opposite riverbank with a telephoto lens between 70 and 200mm, which compresses the buildings and emphasizes the cathedral rising above the town.

Travel Information
Porvoo is located in southern Finland, approximately 50 kilometers east of Helsinki, making it one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from the Finnish capital. The journey takes around 45–60 minutes by car, while regular buses connect Helsinki with Porvoo in approximately one hour.
The historic Old Town is compact and best explored on foot. Several public parking areas surround the town center, though some narrow streets are restricted to local traffic. From the parking areas, it is usually only a short walk to the riverfront and the main photography locations.
For this particular composition, head towards the western side of the Porvoonjoki River, opposite the historic Old Town. The riverbanks and nearby bridges offer excellent viewpoints towards the colorful waterfront buildings and Porvoo Cathedral.
Porvoo is beautiful year-round, but late spring, summer, and early autumn are especially attractive for photography. September is an excellent choice for golden morning light, colorful foliage, and the possibility of mist forming above the river.
If you plan to photograph the town with a drone, check the current Finnish airspace restrictions and local flight regulations before takeoff. Because Porvoo is a populated urban area, pay close attention to rules for flights near buildings and uninvolved people.
