Finland Olavinlinna, Savonlinna Castle
Olavinlinna Castle is one of Finland's most impressive historic landmarks, located on a small rocky island in the heart of Savonlinna, surrounded by the beautiful waters of Lake Saimaa. Built in the 15th century, this medieval fortress is famous for its massive stone walls, distinctive towers, and picturesque lakeside setting.
The castle is especially photogenic during blue hour, when warm illumination contrasts beautifully with the sky's deep blue and the surrounding water. From above, the entire fortress looks especially impressive, with its reflections adding another dimension to the composition.

Photography Tips
For this particular shot, I used my drone during blue hour, shortly after sunset. This is probably the best time to photograph Olavinlinna, as the castle's exterior lights create a wonderful contrast with the remaining natural light.
Try positioning your drone slightly above the castle to capture its distinctive shape, the surrounding waterways, and the forested islands of Lake Saimaa in the background. Calm weather is especially rewarding because the illuminated towers reflect beautifully on the water.
Keep your ISO as low as possible, and watch your shutter speed as the light fades. Shooting in RAW gives you more flexibility when balancing the bright castle lights with the darker surroundings.

Travel Information
Olavinlinna Castle sits in Savonlinna, southeastern Finland, and is easily reached on foot from the town center. A pedestrian bridge connects the castle island to the mainland, making it convenient to explore the fortress and its surroundings.
The castle also hosts the annual Savonlinna Opera Festival in summer. Visitors can explore the historic fortress on guided tours, while the surrounding waterfront offers several excellent photography perspectives.
For the best blue-hour conditions, arrive around sunset and stay until the castle lights become clearly visible against the darkening sky. Late summer and early autumn are particularly beautiful, with fewer visitors and atmospheric evening light.
If you're planning to photograph the castle with a drone, check current airspace restrictions and local flight regulations before taking off.
