France Strasbourg Cathedral
The asymmetrical form of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg makes it one of the most interesting landmarks in Europe.
Built between 1176 & 1439, it was the tallest building in the world from 1647 to 1874. The spire stands 142m high. Today it is the 6th tallest church in the world and the highest extant structure built entirely in the Middle Ages. One of the finest examples of late Gothic architecture.
It can be seen from as far away as the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest.
Apparently there is only one spire because the foundations were not strong enough to support the extra weight of a second spire, hence its distinct profile.
