Georgia Clock Tower, Batumi, Georgia
Standing directly on the corner of Europe Square, Batumi’s Astronomical Clock is one of the most photogenic architectural details in the Old Town. The clock is integrated into the striking tower of the former National Bank building, with its pointed roof, turquoise details, and ornate façade giving it an almost fairy-tale-like appearance. It was easily one of my favorite architectural photo spots during my time in Batumi. Just be patient, as the road is so busy with people and cars; it took me a few minutes to get an empty shot!
Photography Tips
A low perspective works incredibly well here. Shooting from close to street level emphasizes the tower's height and lets its pointed roof lead directly into the sky. A wide-angle lens is ideal for fitting the entire building into a vertical composition, while the trees on either side can be used as a natural frame. Morning light can illuminate the façade beautifully, and passing cars or pedestrians can add scale and a sense of city life!
Travel Information
The Astronomical Clock is located directly beside Europe Square in the heart of Batumi’s Old Town, making it very easy to combine with the Medea Monument, Batumi Piazza, and the nearby waterfront. You can photograph the exterior freely from the surrounding streets. Be careful when shooting from very low angles around the intersection, as traffic can be heavy throughout the day. To get around the city, I really liked renting electric scooters!
