Germany Letzenbergkapelle
This small pilgrimage chapel stands at the summit of a small mountain called Letzenberg. What makes this chapel special is its colorful roof. In addition, Letzenberg itself enjoys a beautiful, exposed location on the edge of the Kraichgau region, overlooking the Upper Rhine Plain, which is why there is a magnificent panoramic view from up here. Only to the north do trees block the view. However, from other vantage points, slightly below the Letzenberg Chapel, you can still find beautiful views of the Kraichgau hills or the Upper Rhine Plain. In addition, the distant view allows you to see as far as the Königstuhl (Heidelberg), Mannheim, the Palatinate Mountains, or the northern Black Forest. The surrounding vineyards also make for nice photo subjects.
Photography Tips
The easiest way is actually to photograph the chapel from the air using a drone. Unfortunately, this is no longer allowed because there’s an airfield nearby. Only from the north can you fly up to a few meters away from the back of the chapel before the “restricted zone” begins (see the drone photos of the spot). However, this is a good vantage point for the light, especially during the winter and fall months. It’s best to use an HDR shot in this case. Travel Information
Parking is available on the Letzenberg. It’s free. However, there’s only one official and permitted route up the mountain—unless you’re a farmer or a winemaker. To get there, drive up Kapellenpfad; before you pass the last house, take a sharp right around the corner, and then follow the signs up to the chapel. This route isn’t suitable for larger vehicles, such as campers or RVs.
Otherwise, just park in town and enjoy the 80–100-meter climb; you'll already be treated to some beautiful views along the way.
