Germany Burg Anholt
The origins of Anholt Castle, located in the Isselburg district of the same name, date back to a 12th-century fortification. In 1169, a Lord of Zuylen was documented in Anholt as a vassal of the Bishop of Utrecht. It is assumed that the moated castle already existed at this time to protect the diocese. The castle complex consisted of the almost eleven-meter-wide Dicker Turm (Thick Tower), a small residential building, and a ring of walls.
In the 14th century, the castle was rebuilt and expanded to its present size. In the 16th century, residential buildings were added to the west and north sides. Around 1700, the moated castle was converted into a Baroque-style palace. The park, with extensive gardens based on French models, dates back to the 18th century.
Anholt Castle was severely damaged during the Second World War and had to be extensively renovated. Many parts of the complex were opened to the public after reconstruction. Today, the castle houses a hotel with a restaurant and a golf club. The main castle and park are open to visitors.
