The Schlägel & Eisen mine was founded in Herten in 1873, with shaft sinking for Shaft 1 starting in 1874. Shaft 3 was sunk in 1895 and equipped in 1896 with a Promnitz-type headframe, now considered the oldest of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1937, the Shaft 3/4 complex was converted into a central production site, and Shaft 7 began operation as the main production shaft in 1941. After severe damage during World War II, the facility was rebuilt. The mine reached its peak output of 2 million tons of coal in 1975. Following several mergers, coal production ceased at Schlägel & Eisen in 1990, and the mine was permanently closed in 2000. The headframes of Shafts 3 and 4 and some buildings were preserved as industrial monuments, with Shaft 4 illuminated at night since 2021.
