Germany Bullensee, Rotenburg/Wümme
A pair of peat-coloured moor lakes hide in the forest just south of Rotenburg: the Großer Bullensee (popular bathing lake) and the quieter Kleiner Bullensee (inside the protected “Großes und Weißes Moor” reserve). Expect tea-brown water from humic acids, pale sand, and a ring of pines that turns windless days into mirror-flat reflections. The big lake offers a broad shallow zone for families and a marked swim area that’s watched by DLRG on summer weekends; the small lake is strictly for looking, not swimming, because of the nature protection status.
Photography Tips
Reflections & minimalism: Hit blue hour or a windless morning to turn the dark water into a mirror. Compose with the jetty or lifeguard tower as a clean anchor. A polariser lets you choose between glare-free clarity or inky reflections—rotate to taste.
Moor textures: Walk the signed paths toward the moor trail for reeds, peat pools, and boardwalk details. Go macro on grasses and bog cotton; mind the fragile ground and stay on paths.

Sunset colour: Western sky pours warm light over the treeline; bracket exposures to hold sky drama over the dark lake.
Wildlife & ethics: Long lenses only; you’re on the edge of a Natura-2000 reserve. Drones are typically not allowed in German nature reserves—skip them here, especially around the Kleiner Bullensee. (Check on-site signage.)
