Large parts of the Hanover-Südstadt were planned and built starting in the mid-1920s and completed in the 1930s. These large-scale housing developments for families were part of the Weimar Republic’s social housing program, which was intended to provide alternatives to the poor living conditions in the old buildings of the city center and to alleviate the housing shortage. During this period, many streets in the Südstadt were lined with four- to five-story multi-family brick buildings
