Germany Bischofsresidenz Burg Ziesar
The Bischofsresidenz Burg Ziesar is an exceptionally well-preserved medieval castle located in rural Brandenburg. From the mid-14th to the mid-16th century, it served as a prominent residence for the Bishops of Brandenburg. The historic complex is characterized by its charming brick and fieldstone architecture, featuring a cultural museum, a beautifully restored chapel, a café, and a striking main tower. This tower is a fantastic subject, especially because its distinctive dome roof was historically shaped to resemble a bishop's hat.
Photography Tips
This picturesque castle looks its absolute best during the golden hours. Photographing the complex at sunrise or sunset provides stunning, warm light that beautifully highlights the historical masonry. If local regulations permit, this is an outstanding location for drone photography. Flying a drone offers a fantastic aerial perspective to capture the entire footprint of the fortress, the intricate layout of the courtyard, and the surrounding landscape in a single, impressive frame.
Travel Information
Getting to Ziesar is highly convenient, as the town is located directly off the A2 autobahn, requiring no major detours. While parking is technically available right in the inner castle courtyard, it is highly recommended to avoid parking there. Modern vehicles in the courtyard can easily ruin the historical atmosphere of your photos especially when shooting from a higher vantage point or with a drone. Instead, use the spacious parking lot located right at the entrance to the Burgpark. It usually has plenty of free spaces available, and from there, it is only a quick, scenic two-minute walk to the castle gates.
