Germany Burg Moonstone
Burg Moonstone in Klein Wulkow, located in the northern Jerichower Land near Jerichow, is a fascinating and highly unique architectural curiosity. Although it perfectly mimics the robust appearance of a high medieval fortress, it is actually a modern passion project constructed beginning in 2003. Local resident Sören Kongehl realized his lifelong dream of owning a castle by meticulously building the structure entirely by hand. Over countless hours of labor, he erected two impressive seven-meter-high towers and a two-meter-high defensive wall, utilizing approximately 50,000 reclaimed fieldstones salvaged from a demolished road. This extraordinary private monument stands as a stunning testament to individual dedication, creativity, and regional craftsmanship.
Photography Tips
Because the castle is situated on private property, the primary vantage point for photography is directly from the adjacent public street. From this viewpoint, you can easily frame the towering stone structures against the surrounding landscape and the sky. The varied textures, shapes, and colors of the 50,000 reclaimed fieldstones provide fantastic opportunities for tight, detail-oriented architectural shots. Photographing during the soft, diffused light of an overcast day or during the golden hours of the late afternoon is highly recommended, as the angled light beautifully emphasizes the rugged, three-dimensional surface of the handcrafted masonry while preventing harsh shadows.
Travel Information
The quiet village of Klein Wulkow is easily accessible when exploring the northern Jerichower Land around the city of Jerichow. You can conveniently view and photograph the impressive castle directly from the public roadside. Since Burg Moonstone is a private residence, it is absolutely essential to respect the owner's privacy and never enter the grounds uninvited. If you are highly interested in seeing the interior of the fortress, it is sometimes possible to request a brief tour directly from Mr. Kongehl if he happens to be at home; however, visitors must remain completely understanding and respectful if he is unavailable or declines the request.
