Greenland Iceberg channel in Rødefjord, Scoresbysund

Røde Fjord is a remote branch of the Scoresbysund system, surrounded by steep mountains and often filled with drifting icebergs from the surrounding glaciers. Sailing through the channel means carefully navigating between the bergs, sometimes passing surprisingly close to large pieces of ice while constantly assessing the safest route.

When launching from a moving sailboat, take off into the wind from a clear part of the deck and consider hand-catching when landing. And always keep a close eye on the wind and battery — flying away from a moving boat can quickly eat into your return time, especially in the unpredictable conditions around this fjord system.

Scoresbysund is one of the most remote places you can reach in Greenland. There are no roads or infrastructure here. The area is explored by sailing boat, smaller expedition vessel, kayak or multi-day guided kayak trips, with August to roughly mid-September being the best window to experience it. Just around 500 people coming per year.
