Greenland Glacier sediments at Øfjord, Scoresbysund

Øfjord is strongly influenced by glacial meltwater, which carries fine sediments and silts eroded from beneath the surrounding glaciers into the fjord. The suspended sediment gives parts of the water a characteristic grey-green blue colour and gradually settles on the seafloor, forming thick layers of glacial sediment.

Photography Tips

When launching from a moving sailboat, take off into the wind from a clear part of the deck and consider hand-catching when landing. And always keep a close eye on the wind and battery — flying away from a moving boat can quickly eat into your return time, especially in the unpredictable conditions around this fjord system.

Travel Information

Scoresbysund is one of the most remote places you can reach in Greenland. There are no roads or infrastructure here. The area is explored by sailing boat, smaller expedition vessel, kayak or multi-day guided kayak trips, with August to roughly mid-September being the best window to experience it. Just around 500 people coming per year.
