Iceland Hofskirkja
Hof Church, or Hofskirkja, is a historic turf church tucked away in Öræfi in Southeast Iceland, surrounded by dramatic turf-covered burial mounds and rugged mountainous scenery. Built in 1884, it stands as the final church constructed in the country's traditional turf style, designed with thick stone walls and a grassy roof to withstand harsh arctic weather. Today, maintained by the National Museum of Iceland as a historical monument, it remains an active parish church and one of the island's most iconic architectural gems.
Photography Tips
Get Low to Emphasize the Mounds: Crouch down near the edge of the graveyard path to shoot from a low angle. Using a wide angle lens (around 24mm or 35mm equivalent) from lower to the ground emphasizes the undulating grassy mounds in the foreground, making the turf roof blend seamlessly into the dramatic rolling terrain.
