Iceland Seljalandsfoss river, Iceland
Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland’s most photographed waterfalls, so finding a different perspective is especially rewarding. Instead of focusing only on the classic view close to the falls, step back to reveal the small river flowing away from Seljalandsfoss. In winter, surrounded by deep snow, its dark water creates a beautiful natural leading line directly towards the waterfall and the towering cliffs behind it.
Photography Tips
A wide-angle lens works particularly well from this position. Get relatively low and use the river's curve to guide the viewer from the foreground all the way to Seljalandsfoss. At sunrise or sunset, the snow can catch beautiful warm light while the river stays dark, creating extra contrast and depth. This is also a great alternative when the immediate area around the waterfall is busy, as moving away opens up completely different compositions.
Travel Information
Seljalandsfoss sits directly along Iceland’s South Coast and Ring Road, with a designated parking area only a short walk from the waterfall. Rather than heading straight towards the falls, take some time to explore the surrounding paths and river for less obvious viewpoints like this one. In winter, paths can become extremely icy, so microspikes are highly recommended. Also, make sure to visit nearby Gljúfrabúi, which is only a short walk away and can easily be combined with Seljalandsfoss; paid parking is required!
