Italy The Ferata de Gherdëina
On the old route of the Val Gardena railway, built by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy using more than 6,000 Russian prisoners of war, there is now a beautiful walking path connecting Selva di Val Gardena with Ortisei. Along the way, several information boards tell the story of the railway, including an iron structure indicating the snow heights reached in different years and a wooden model of Castel Gardena. The path offers stunning views of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as panoramic vistas over the towns of Selva di Val Gardena and Santa Cristina, and a view of Castel Gardena at the foot of the legendary Sassolungo, the mountain that gives its name to one of the valley’s most famous ski slopes.
