Italy Val di Funes - Villnösser Tal
Santa Maddalena is located in the rear part of the valley at 1.339 m e has about 370 inhabitants. Here, at the foot of the Ruefen, also one of the symbols of the valley rises, which is the Santa Maddalena church (1,394 m): according to a legend, this is the place where the miraculous image of Santa Maddalena was washed up by the Fopal river. This church, obviously with the Odle mountains in the background, is one of the most popular photo motifs of the Dolomites.
Only a few km from Santa Maddalena, there is the Zannes mountain pasture, which is starting point for a variety of hikes in all the seasons. Adolf Munkel trail at the foot of the Odle peaks, a walk on the nature trail, to the Rif. Gampen, or a tour to the Sasso Putia, the Puez-Odle nature park offers destinations for all mountaineering levels. By the way, Santa Maddalena is also the site of the visitors’ centre, making you admire this green area from a bird’s eye perspective, “touch the mountains” and much more.
In winter, Santa Maddalena offers a ski lift in the centre of the village, ideal for making the first passes on skis. Moreover you can do cross-country skiing along the Zannes round trail or the Russis - Rif. Halshütte - Passo delle Erbe trail. If you prefer snowshoeing, we recommend you the Col di Poma, but there are also other worthy destinations. To make you winter dream complete, you can experience the snow-capped landscape on the horseback.

Photography Tips
The best would be to visit at sunset, say around 5:30 pm in autumn time. You will be amazed at the amount of cars already parked alongside the road and the number of tripods :)
You can walk around and try different perspectives.

Travel Information
You can drive up to the village and further up, but parking is very limited due to narrow roads leading up to the vantage points. You can park somewhere in the village and hike uphill.
