Lago di Braies is renowned for its crystal-clear alpine lake, but its true beauty extends far beyond the shoreline. Take the time to explore the surrounding meadows, forests, and quiet trails, and you'll discover a different side of the Dolomites, one that's calm, intimate, and often overlooked.

This image isn't about a grand landscape or an iconic landmark. It's about simplicity. A lone wooden hut surrounded by wildflowers, framed by an ancient forest and illuminated by fleeting morning light. It captures the quiet character of the Dolomites, the moments of stillness that often go unnoticed while everyone rushes toward the main attraction.

Sometimes, the best photograph of the day isn't the one everyone comes for. It's the one you almost walked past.

Photography Tips

*Photography Tips*
Bring a telephoto lens (70–200mm or 70–300mm) to isolate details and compress the forest backdrop.
Morning mist and side light create a magical atmosphere, particularly after a cool night.
Arrive early and be patient; the light changes quickly, and the most beautiful moments often last only a few minutes.

Final Tip: Don't arrive with a single photo in mind. Let the light guide your creativity. At iconic locations like Lago di Braies, everyone photographs the same view. The images you'll treasure most are often the ones you discover by accident, just as I did with this quiet little hut hidden among the trees.

Nestled in the heart of the Fanes Sennes Braies Nature Park in South Tyrol, Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) is one of the most photographed lakes in the Italian Dolomites. With its emerald waters, towering limestone peaks, and dense spruce forests, it's easy to see why this location has become a bucket-list destination for photographers and hikers alike.

Best Time to Visit
Late May to early October offers the best weather and access to hiking trails.
June and July bring vibrant alpine meadows filled with wildflowers.
September and October provide beautiful autumn colours with fewer visitors.
For photographers, sunrise is by far the best time to visit. The lake is often calm, the light is soft, and you'll avoid the busiest crowds.
Getting There

Lago di Braies is approximately:

45 minutes from Cortina d'Ampezzo
1.5 hours from Bolzano
2.5 hours from Innsbruck, Austria

The lake is easily reached by car, with several parking areas (P1–P4). During the peak summer season, vehicle access may be restricted, so it's worth checking current regulations before travelling.
