About the location
Stretching over four miles, this structure is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. For photographers, the most iconic viewpoint is from the Astoria side, where the bridge rises steeply to allow massive cargo ships to pass underneath. This elevation creates a powerful sense of scale, especially when framed against the often moody, cloud-filled skies of the Pacific Northwest.
The bridge spans a vast estuary where the river meets the Pacific Ocean, which means the lighting and weather conditions change rapidly. You can capture everything from the bridge disappearing into a thick morning fog to it being silhouetted against a vibrant coastal sunset. The green steel of the trusses provides a wonderful color contrast against the blue and grey tones of the water and sky, offering endless opportunities for both wide-angle landscapes and abstract architectural details.
