Perched high above Għajn Tuffieħa Bay, Torri ta’ Għajn Tuffieħa is one of those places where Malta’s history and coastline come together perfectly. The small limestone watchtower was completed in 1637 as one of the Lascaris Towers, forming part of a network designed to watch and defend Malta’s coastline.

From the air, however, the tower almost becomes secondary to the surrounding landscape. This perspective shows the dramatic headland, the sheltered curve of Għajn Tuffieħa Bay and the rugged coastline stretching towards the horizon.

Photography Tips

Late afternoon and sunset are particularly beautiful here. The low sun turns Malta’s pale limestone almost orange, creating a strong contrast with the deep blue Mediterranean. In this shot, the warm light hitting the cliff edge creates a natural leading line directly toward the tower.

A drone is ideal for showing the watchtower's scale and position. Rather than flying too close, gaining altitude and pulling backwards allows you to incorporate the bay, headland and surrounding landscape into a single composition.

For an image like this, I would also expose primarily for the illuminated cliffs. Preserving those bright golden-hour highlights helps maintain the atmosphere, while the darker vegetation and water naturally add depth.

Travel Information

The tower stands on the cliffs above Għajn Tuffieħa Bay on Malta’s northwestern coast, close to Mġarr. Historically, it maintained visual contact with nearby defensive towers, allowing this stretch of coastline to be monitored as part of a wider system.

For photographers, it is worth arriving well before sunset. That gives you time to explore the viewpoints around the headland before the light softens and warms. The combination of historic architecture, rugged cliffs, and sheltered Mediterranean bays makes this one of my favorite areas for landscape photography on Malta.
