Netherlands Zaanse Schans
Zaanse Schans is a neighborhood in the Dutch town of Zaandam, near Amsterdam. Historic windmills and distinctive green wooden houses were relocated here to recreate the look of an 18th/19th-century village. The Zaans Museum has regional costumes, model windmills, and interactive exhibits on chocolate making. Artisan workshops demonstrate rare handicrafts such as wooden clog carving, barrel making, and pewter casting. The spot is one of the primary spots where people pose before the windmills. A vista with a great composition of the windmills.
Photography Tips
Use a tripod to capture the silk effect of the water. Use an ND Filter for long exposures. If you are lucky, you could catch one of the windmills in operation, creating a smooth motion blur of the windmill blades. The pier itself is very robust, with a lot of people around. Try finding a spot and beware of your gear not falling into the water.
Travel Information
There are a couple of car park areas in the little village. Coming from Amsterdam, you can get here by bus or by train. With a bus, you can get down right by the village. With a train, you have to walk a bit from the station of Zaandijk. I prefer the long walk as the way to the spot is a better adventure than the bus ride.
