Photograph taken in the famous Zaanse Schans village, showing the 'De Kat' pigment mill. This mill, originally built in 1782, is the only working windmill of its kind in the world, grinding materials to create paints and pigments.

Photography Tips

Composition: The mill is the focal point, but the water and vegetation in the foreground, along with the dramatic sunset clouds, add depth and interest. Use the rule of thirds to position the mill and the horizon.

Lighting: Sunset is the ideal time to photograph this mill. Golden light or dramatic clouds enhance the colors. To capture the reflections in the water, use a tripod and a longer exposure.

Viewpoints: In addition to the frontal view, explore the surrounding area. You can photograph it from nearby bridges, with the canals in the foreground, or from the opposite bank to capture the entire scene.

Travel Information

Hours: The "De Kat" mill is open to the public every day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Hours may vary, so it is recommended to check their official website.

Admission: Admission to the mill is subject to a fee, and staff can guide you through the interior.

Accessibility: Please note that, due to the age of the building, the mill is not accessible to people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs. Full access to the mill involves climbing very steep steps, although the ground floor is accessible.

History and Function: This is the only mill of its kind in the world still in operation. It uses wind power to grind minerals and chalk, producing pigments for paints in the traditional way.

Shopping: The mill has a shop where you can purchase the pigments and paints produced on-site.
