Alex Knob is one of New Zealand's finest day hikes, rewarding hikers with spectacular panoramic views of Fox Glacier, Aoraki / Mount Cook, Mount Tasman, and the surrounding Southern Alps. The summit rises above the rainforest into alpine terrain, offering breathtaking scenery across glacier-carved valleys and snow-capped peaks.

Photography Tips

If you have person in frame for the adventure character or scale, it will add up a lot to the frame and the photo. Take care on contrasts and colors with the clothes of the person so it pops out better.

Travel Information

The Alex Knob Track begins near Fox Glacier Village, approximately a 5-minute drive from the town centre. The return hike is about 17.5 km (10.9 mi), takes 8–9 hours, climbs roughly 1,300 m (4,265 ft), and is recommended only in good weather due to its steep terrain and exposed alpine section.
