Mount Brown Hut is one of New Zealand's most scenic backcountry huts, perched high above Lake Kaniere with breathtaking panoramic views over the lake, Hokitika, the Tasman Sea, and the Southern Alps.

Photography Tips

Flying drone here was once permitted before DOC took over that land. Nowadays, you need a permit which needs to be acquired by DOC directly.

Travel Information

The Mount Brown Track begins at the eastern side of Lake Kaniere, about a 25-minute drive from Hokitika. The return hike is approximately 15 km (9.3 mi), takes 6–8 hours, and climbs around 1,000 m (3,280 ft) to the bookable hut, making it a rewarding overnight adventure.
