New Zealand Brewster Glacier
Brewster Glacier is a spectacular alpine glacier in Mount Aspiring National Park, surrounded by towering peaks, icefalls, and rugged mountain scenery. Reached via a steep hike beyond Brewster Hut, it offers a true high-alpine experience with breathtaking views of the Southern Alps and one of New Zealand's most accessible glaciers.
Photography Tips
If you find holes in the big chunks of ice, you can loop in the frame with a person on the other side. Take care NOT to go too close to the ice caves if you're not sure what to do in ice and if you cannot read the weather.
Travel Information
The hike begins at the Fantail Falls car park on State Highway 6, about a 1-hour drive north of Wānaka along Haast Pass. Reaching Brewster Glacier typically involves an overnight stay at Brewster Hut, with the hut reached in 2–3 hours and the glacier requiring an additional 2–3 hours of steep alpine hiking. The glacier section is suitable only for experienced hikers in good weather.
