New Zealand Alex Knob Summit Sign
The alpine section of the Alex Knob Track is one of the best places to encounter the kea, New Zealand's endemic alpine parrot. Known for their remarkable intelligence, playful behaviour, and curiosity, kea are often seen around the upper ridgelines and summit, where they soar above the Southern Alps or investigate hikers' gear.
Photography Tips
Fast shutter speeds are necessary here since wildlife can almost move fast.
Travel Information
Kea are most commonly spotted above the treeline on the final section of the Alex Knob Track near the summit. If you encounter one, admire it from a distance, never feed it, and keep backpacks and loose equipment secure, as these curious birds are famous for exploring—and sometimes damaging—unattended gear.
