Bjordal Church is a charming, historically rich wooden parish church located in the village of Bjordal within Norway's Vestland county. Nestled on a picturesque hilltop overlooking the stunning Fuglesetfjorden, the white long-church was designed by architect Victor Nordan and officially consecrated in 1906. Originally built as a local annex chapel to spare residents a long, arduous 12-kilometer journey across the fjord to Kyrkjebø, it was officially upgraded to a full parish church in 1997. With its classic Scandinavian architectural style set against a dramatic, imposing backdrop of deep fjords and soaring mountain peaks, it stands as a truly idyllic and peaceful representation of rural Norwegian heritage.

Photography Tips

The stark white wooden facade of the church creates a striking, beautiful contrast against the deep blues of the fjord and the rugged, dark mountain terrain in the background. To give your wide-angle compositions an authentic, natural depth, lower your perspective and utilize the vibrant local lupines or the heavily moss-covered stones as prominent foreground framing elements. The elevated hilltop position of the church grounds also provides fantastic, unobstructed opportunities to capture sweeping, panoramic landscape shots of the Fuglesetfjorden stretching out into the distance.

Travel Information

Bjordal is an exceptionally relaxing and highly scenic destination for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Vestland region. The nearby Nesttun Camping serves as an absolutely perfect, convenient basecamp, offering excellent access right on the water for a relaxing day of fjord fishing. Beyond admiring and photographing the historic church, it is highly recommended to take the short, slightly steep but highly rewarding hike up the adjacent mountain. This accessible trail provides breathtaking panoramic views of the entire fjord valley, and reaching the top allows you to sign your name in the traditional small summit register book left for hikers.
