Portugal Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo, Azores
Just off the southern coast of São Miguel, the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo is one of the most distinctive landscapes in the Azores. The small volcanic islet is actually the remains of an ancient submerged crater, with an almost perfectly circular natural lagoon opening towards the Atlantic. From the air, its volcanic origin becomes especially obvious – and the tiny colorful kayaks in the water give a great sense of scale.
Photography Tips
A drone is perfect for showing the islet's full shape. Instead of flying directly overhead, I prefer a slightly angled perspective like this one: it reveals the circular lagoon while still showing the cliffs and endless Atlantic surrounding it. The colorful kayaks or boats can add a small but effective point of interest. Morning or late-afternoon light is particularly nice, as the lower sun creates more texture across the green crater walls.
Travel Information
Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo lies just offshore from the town of Vila Franca do Campo on São Miguel. During the summer season, boats take visitors across to the islet, where the protected lagoon is popular for swimming and snorkeling. Access is regulated, and visitor numbers are limited, so during busy periods it is worth checking availability in advance. Kayaking around the islet is another great way to experience its volcanic cliffs from sea level. For drone photography, check current local flight restrictions beforehand, as rules around protected natural areas may apply.
