The abandoned Monte Palace Hotel sits atop the crater rim of Sete Cidades on São Miguel Island in the Azores. Once a luxury resort, it now stands as an eerie, overgrown ruin with panoramic views over the twin lakes of Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde. Its decaying structure, combined with the dramatic landscape, creates a powerful contrast that’s perfect for atmospheric and storytelling photography.

Climb to the top floor for the best view over the crater lakes. Use a wide-angle lens to capture both the decaying hotel interior and the sweeping landscape beyond. Fog and low clouds often roll through the area—take advantage of these conditions for a moody, cinematic effect.

Monte Palace Hotel is located at the Miradouro da Vista do Rei viewpoint and is easily accessible by car. Parking is available right next to the hotel. While the building is abandoned, visitors can still explore it at their own risk—be cautious, as the structure is deteriorating.
