Portugal Parque Natural Ribeira dos Caldeirões
The Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park is an Azorean protected area located along part of the Ribeira dos Caldeirões watercourse, in the parish of Achada, Nordeste municipality, on the island of São Miguel. This natural park is located on the slopes of the Serra da Tronqueira and occupies part of the Ribeira do Guilherme river, a river also home to the Ribeira do Guilherme Botanical Garden.
This natural park boasts an abundant and varied Macaronesian flora, with Laurissilva being dominant and large tree ferns prominent. Also found are abundant stands of hydrangeas and large cryptomeria. Notable in this natural park, which extends along the river, is the existence of a waterfall that supplies water to part of the park. The presence of Priolo (Priolo) in its forests, associated with various plant species, led to the park's inclusion in the Pico da Vara and Ribeira do Guilherme Special Protection Area.
The Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park has five watermills within it. Three of the park's mills, all owned by the Nordeste Municipal Council, are classified as Properties of Public Interest by Resolution No. 79/97 of April 10, published in the Official Gazette of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. These mills date back to the 16th century and, among many others scattered throughout the Northeast, were the sole source of subsistence and income for countless families. Some of the mills are still in operation, and one houses an ethnographic museum. The miller's houses have been converted into a craft shop, rural tourism, and snack bar.
