Portugal Pico Ruivo Hiking Trail
Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on Madeira Island and the third-highest in Portugal, standing at 1,862 meters (6,106 feet) above sea level.
Located in the municipality of Santana, it is a prominent natural landmark offering panoramic views of the island’s dramatic landscapes, including the valleys of Ribeira Grande and São Jorge, the parish of Curral das Freiras, and on clear days, even the distant Porto Santo and Desertas Islands.

Driving and Parking Options
1 - Achada do Teixeira Car Park
Most popular and easiest access point to Pico Ruivo. Located at 1,590 meters altitude, about 2.8 km from the summit.
Free parking available.
Accessible via a paved road from Santana, in the northeast of Madeira.
No public bus service directly to this car park.
2 - Pico do Arieiro Car Park
Starting point for the PR1 trail, a more challenging but scenic hike to Pico Ruivo. Also offers free parking and has a restaurant nearby.
Accessible by car, but no bus service directly to the peak.
3 - Boca da Encumeada
Starting point for the PR21 trail, the most difficult route. Has a large free car park and two cafés.
Accessible by bus line 6 (Funchal – Arco São Jorge), but only once a day.
