Photography Tips
• Vale Furado #28 (2011), Portugal
• Olympus E3, 12-60/2.8 • Iso 100 • 12mm • f/8 • 1/200sec
Using a wide-angle lens allows you to capture the full scale of the coastal landscape and enhance the sense of depth between the cliffs, the beach, and the ocean. A mid-range aperture provides good depth of field and excellent sharpness throughout the scene. Beyond panoramic views, consider including foreground elements such as the graphic patterns of sea foam to create leading lines that guide the eye through the composition.
The soft light of sunrise or sunset enhances the textures of the cliffs and adds depth and atmosphere to the photograph. In this monochrome rendering, a relatively fast shutter speed of 1/200sec was chosen to freeze the dynamic shapes of the foam on the wet sand, capturing the crisp contrast and movement of the Atlantic tide before it recedes.
