This dramatic landscape spot captures the breathtaking view looking up toward the iconic Cântaro Magro, a towering granite rock formation reaching approximately 1,420 meters in altitude. Located just along the main mountain pass road overlooking the famous Covão d'Ametade glacial depression, this spot marks the very beginning of the Zêzere Glacier Valley. Photographers and nature enthusiasts should visit to shoot the jaw-dropping contrast between the rugged, steep cliffs and the delicate silver birch forests blanketing the lower slopes. It offers one of the most raw, alpine-like landscape compositions found in mainland Portugal.

Photography Tips

This location is an absolute premier spot for sunrise photography. As the sun rises, the first rays of light illuminate the highest granite spires of Cântaro Magro, turning them into a glowing, fiery orange while the valley below remains in cool shadow. A wide-angle lens (16-35mm) is perfect to include the colorful foreground shrubs and birch trees while maintaining the grand scale of the peaks. Alternatively, a standard zoom lens (24-70mm) will help compress the layers and emphasize the sheer verticality of the mountain walls. To keep your shadows clean and highlights controlled during this high-contrast golden hour moment, consider using a graduated ND filter or capturing bracketed exposures for an HDR blend.

Travel Information

Accessing this viewpoint is highly convenient as it sits directly along the scenic N338 mountain road that connects the town of Manteigas to the higher peaks of Serra da Estrela. Free roadside parking clearings are available right at the entrance gates to the Covão d'Ametade recreational area. From there, you can easily shoot straight from the road banks or take a short walk up the paths to clear the treeline for an unobstructed view. Please note that during the peak winter season, this section of the N338 road is frequently closed due to heavy snow accumulation and ice, making autumn and spring the most reliable seasons for easy access.
