Portugal Faja Grande, Azores Islands

The coastline around Fajã Grande on Flores Island is among the most dramatic in the Azores. Just north of the village, towering green cliffs rise almost directly from the Atlantic, while small fields, stone walls, and narrow roads occupy the tiny strip of flatter land between the mountains and the ocean. During golden hour, the low sunlight can completely transform the landscape, illuminating the cliffs while dark Atlantic clouds create a beautiful contrast in the background.

This coastline is particularly impressive with a drone, as the elevated perspective shows just how narrow the inhabited coastal strip really is. Flying parallel to the shore creates strong leading lines through the beach and breaking waves, while keeping some of the agricultural fields in the frame adds texture and scale. Late afternoon and sunset are especially good here, when warm side light can hit the west-facing coastline. With Flores' constantly changing weather, patches of sunlight breaking through darker clouds often produce the most dramatic conditions.

The area north of Fajã Grande is worth exploring slowly rather than simply visiting one viewpoint. Small roads lead through fields and along sections of the coast, with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery. Fajã Grande itself also makes an excellent base for exploring western Flores, including its waterfalls, hiking trails and volcanic landscapes. Weather on this exposed side of the island can change extremely quickly, so expect wind and rain even on otherwise sunny days.
