Portugal Ribeira Grande waterfall, Azores Islands

Hidden among the immense volcanic cliffs of Flores Island, the Ribeira Grande waterfall is a perfect example of why Flores is often considered the wildest and greenest island in the Azores. Water tumbles down several levels of dark volcanic rock before disappearing into the densely vegetated valley below.

What makes this location especially impressive is its scale. The waterfall itself is spectacular, but the combination of the towering cliffs, deep valley, and Atlantic landscape in the distance really defines the scene. Passing clouds and short bursts of sunlight can completely transform the valley, illuminating individual sections of the landscape while others remain in shadow.

Photography Tips

Instead of concentrating only on the waterfall, use a wider composition to include the surrounding cliffs and valley. This gives the waterfall context and communicates the landscape's enormous scale much better.

The tall grasses around the viewpoint can also work beautifully as a natural foreground, as in this image. Shooting through them creates additional depth and makes the photograph feel less like a conventional waterfall shot.

Overcast or partly cloudy weather is ideal here. Soft light preserves detail in the dark volcanic cliffs, while occasional sunlight breaking through the clouds can add dramatic highlights to the valley.

Travel Information

The Ribeira Grande waterfall is located on Flores, an island famous for its extraordinary concentration of waterfalls, steep valleys and lush vegetation. The landscape becomes particularly impressive after periods of rainfall, when considerably more water flows down the surrounding cliffs.

Weather on Flores changes extremely quickly, so waterproof clothing and good footwear are useful even when conditions initially look dry. Trails and viewpoints can also become muddy and slippery after heavy rainfall, especially close to steep terrain.

Take some time at the viewpoint rather than leaving when clouds move in. On Flores, waiting just ten or twenty minutes can be enough for the light to completely change and reveal an entirely different version of the landscape.
