The Vista dos Barcos Viewpoint is another beautiful viewpoint on the east coast of São Miguel Island, in the municipality of Nordeste. This viewpoint offers incredible views of the sea and the iconic Faro do Arnel, one of the most important spots for whale watching near the coast.

Situated between the well-known Ponta do Sossego Viewpoint and Ponta do Arnel Viewpoint, these three viewpoints are located within close proximity, making it common to visit them on the same day. What they all have in common is the sea as their backdrop, although each offers a unique perspective of São Miguel Island and its natural wonders.

The lighthouse and coastal elements are set far down from the viewing platform, making a zoom lens essential for sharp, close-up framing.

Morning light hits the eastern cliffs and the white lighthouse directly, creating a warm glow over the Atlantic.

Use the manicured plants, stone walls, or local hydrangeas (in season) at the viewpoint to add depth to your wide shots.

A CPL filter cuts down ocean glare and deepens the blue of the sea and sky.

The eastern edge gets very windy; a sturdy tripod is vital if you are shooting slower shutter speeds at dawn or dusk.

Renting a car is the easiest way to reach the site, and there is a small parking area nearby for convenient access.

If you want an up-close look at the Arnel Lighthouse, do not drive down the extremely steep, winding access road with a 35% incline; park at the designated upper lot along the main road (EN1-1A) and walk down, keeping in mind that the hike back up is very strenuous.
